Community Engagement

Shadowing our Process Safety Manager Keighley Ziolkowski, Chloe has been working on a range of projects, including modelling a range of fire scenarios, to determine the rate of thermal radiation impacting on personnel and equipment.

Shadowing Conchi Lopez, Project Engineer at Mabbett, Bryony supported on projects including Business Energy Scotland Resource Efficiency Audits for various SMEs, ESOS Phase 3 audits and PV Sol modelling.

Romy is a student completing her master’s degree in Renewable Energy at Edinburgh Napier University. She supported our team on a range of services, supporting our engineers as they conducted site audits, supported clients to achieve compliance through the Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme, and provided innovative energy support through solar photovoltaic design.

Susan Woodhouse joined the speaker line up at Scottish Engineering for the breakfast event sharing her career journey.

Amy Kerr, Environmental Health & Safety Compliance Consultant and Beth Westmorland, Process Safety Engineer joined the judging panel for EDT (The Engineering Development Trust) Industrial Cadets Bronze Project National Final.

For the final, teams from 2nd year high school prepared a written report, a model or a poster which was presented to the industry assessors. Amy and Beth thoroughly enjoyed reading the reports and listening to the different schools presenting their innovative ideas, supported by amazing models.

A high school student who aspires to a career in the fields of environment and sustainability, Maisie spent a week with our team at Mabbett House where she met with and shadowed our ecologists, scientists, and engineers. She also had opportunity to experience site visits.

Our water environment team was at Newcastle University talking about their roles as Flood Risk and Drainage Consultants at Mabbett. They shared their knowledge in environmental consulting to future graduates of MSc Hydrology and Water Management and the MSc Environmental Engineering students.

As one of 40 exhibitors, the Team had the privledge to meet with and provide early careers advice to students, across a wide spectrum of Mabbett related career areas, to assist them pick their subjects or to signpost to further information.

A number of Mabbetteer’s supported a two day STEM Event organised by Developing the Young Workforce West. The Team had the opportunity to engage with ambitious young minds from local schools to spread knowledge and inspire them into choosing STEM career paths.

Mabbett were delighted to host Chloe Jones on work experience, a 16-year-old high school student with ambitions of becoming a Chemical Engineer. Chloe spent a number of days at Mabbett House where she met and spoke with engineers, scientists and technicians across our different service areas, to find out more about what they studied at university and where their career has taken them since.

We were delighted to welcome Madeleine Bell into our Engineering Team to gain work experience. Madeleine has just completed her fourth year in Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Strathclyde University. During her time with us, Madeleine shadowed Nick Clark and Craig Young, gaining exposure to both environmental and process engineering projects.

Susan Borland (Senior Environmental Scientist) mentored two S2 groups from Hyndland Secondary School. We also hosted the mentees at our offices to experience a STEM workplace. The mentees enjoyed meeting and chatting with some of the team to learn more about their roles and what led them to choose a STEM career.

Mabbett Managing Director, Derek J. McNab had the pleasure of sharing his career journey to become a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) with the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and Society for the Environment (SocEnv) during a Spotlight Webinar entitled ‘Becoming a Chartered Environmentalist.’

Isabella Marshall, Project Manager and Senior Geo-Environmental Engineer delivered a guest lecture as part of the Chemical Engineering Degree. Isabella lectured on ‘Contaminated Land Site Assessment and Remediation’ which discussed the Principles of Contaminated Land Risk Assessments, Conceptual Site Models and site investigation and remedial approach.

Our Director of Operations, Andy Lee, was interviewed by the pupils of Primary 6A and 6B of Troon Primary School.  After a short presentation on what an engineer is and does, Andy was put to the test on a range of topics: from climate change to engineering as a career.

International Women in Engineering Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate our female process safety, environmental and chemical engineers who design, develop and implement innovative process safety and engineering solutions to assist our clients to reduce risk, improve compliance, save money and achieve their net zero goals.

An integral part of our Women in STEM working group is acting as ambassadors engaging with primary, secondary school and university students to raise awareness of a career in a STEM subject.
