ISO 14001:2015 is edging closer to publication

3rd September 2014

ISO 14001:2004 is in the process of being revised by The International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The revised version, ISO 14001:2015, is edging closer to publication and in June 2014, a Draft International Standard (DIS) was published and is currently open for public comment until 31 October 2014. The DIS can be accessed from British Standards Institution (BSI) for comment.

Once the consultation period on the DIS closes, a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) will be published prior to final publication, anticipated by the end of 2015.

ISO summarise the main changes to the ISO 14001 management system standard as:

  • a greater focus on risk management;
  • a more robust link between environmental management, top management and the organisation’s strategic direction, and
  • a shift towards improving environmental performance rather than the management system itself.
