Bag Tax introduced in Northern Ireland

08 April 2013 saw the introduction of a bag tax in Northern Ireland in a move to reduce the number of carrier bags used and thus better protect the environment. Retailers must now charge shoppers at least five pence for each new single-use carrier bag. The carrier bag tax will apply to plastic bags as well as those made from paper and plant based materials such as starch.
