IOSH Managing Safely

Overview

Managing Safely is for managers and supervisors in any sector, and any organisation. It is a programme to provide an understanding of how to deal with safety and health issues in the workplace and give an awareness of everyone’s responsibilities. It is designed to provide managers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to integrate effective health and safety management and loss control practices into their leadership role.

• Managers and anyone with management and leadership responsibility for staff.
• Those who need a clear understanding of the key elements of effective health and safety management and associated legislation.
• Those who wish to obtain a nationally-recognised management qualification in occupational health and safety.

Course Objectives

On completion, delegates will be better able to:

• Describe the key reasons to manage safety and health in the workplace.
• Define the key terms relating to safety and health.
• Identify how the law can have an impact on safety and health in the workplace.
• Describe how to assess, reduce and control risk in the workplace.
• Identify workplace hazards and risks, their impact and how to manage them.
• Identify how to evaluate and respond to an incident.
• List the benefits and characteristics of an effective health and safety management system.
• Describe the principles that underpin good safety and health performance.

Course Content

Module 1: Introducing Managing Safely

Some managers may see health and safety as an add-on to their role – even an intrusion. It makes it clear that managers are accountable for their teams, and makes a persuasive case for managing safely. It includes the three-key reasons, moral, legal and financial for managing safely and a Managers responsibility and accountability for safety and health in the workplace.

Module 2: Assessing Risks

This module defines and demystifies ‘risk’ and ‘risk assessment’. Risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced, and delegates carry out a series of assessments. It defines the “likelihood” and “consequences” and highlights the benefits in conducting risk assessments.

Module 3: Controlling Risks

Here the session tackles cutting risks down, concentrating on the best techniques to control key risks, and how to choose the right method.

Module 4: Understanding Responsibilities

This module looks at the demands of the law and how the legal system works, and introduces a health and safety management system.

Module 5: Understanding Hazards

All the main issues any operation has to deal with are covered in this module – entrances and exits, work traffic, fire, chemicals, electricity, physical and verbal abuse, bullying, stress, noise, housekeeping and the working environment, slips, trips and falls, working at height, computers and manual handling.

Module 6: Investigating Incidents

The session starts with why accidents should be investigated, and goes on to cover why things go wrong, and how to carry out an investigation when they do.

Module 7: Measuring Performance

This module explains how checking performance can help to improve health and safety. Delegates learn how to develop basic performance indicators and get to grips with auditing and proactive and reactive measuring.

Course Assessment

This course will be assessed by delegates undertaking a multiple choice exam and submitting a risk assessment project.
