Occupational Hygiene – Reduce your Business Risk and Safeguard Employees’ Health
Dust - Welding Fumes - Crystalline Silica - Noise - Vibration – Poor Air Quality
If you have identified any of the above hazards in your workplace, then there may be a possible risk to health of persons at your site.
Health risks include: vibration white-finger, occupational asthma, skin problems such as contact dermatitis and industrial deafness.
Not only can these hazards reduce working hours through sickness, but also expose your business to losses through compensation claims.
The law, enforced by the HSE (Scotland, England and Wales) and HSENI (Northern Ireland), requires that businesses are vigilant in recognising, assessing and controlling risks in the workplace, including those that could pose health problems to employees as a result of processes, workplace environments and activities.
Mabbett implement rigorous occupational hygiene monitoring programmes in line with recognised and accepted methods. These help clients to demonstrate the extent of the ‘safe and healthy workplace’ as required by HSE. Typical occupational hygiene services include monitoring for airborne substances, occupational and environmental noise assessments, investigations into exposure to and hand-arm/whole-body vibration, and indoor air quality investigations, click here for more information. Omar Khalid, who heads our Occupational Hygiene Team, is listed in:
- the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) Directory of Occupational Hygiene Consultants - the only U.K. Directory of qualified Occupational Hygienists, and
- the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) – established by the HSE, a register of consultants who are accredited to a professional body, including: BOHS, IOSH, IIRSM.
During 2014, Mabbett supported multiple sectors, including manufacturing, heavy and light engineering, electronics, education and life sciences. Our programmes included monitoring literally hundreds of employees and static monitoring locations, covering in excess of 70 different substances and physical agents.
Our occupational hygiene team were hard at work last year helping our clients see a difference, including:
- taking airborne protein samples in seafood production facilities.
- sampling airborne dusts and hazardous substances in manufacturing and life sciences facilities.
- assessing noise exposure levels in heavy industrial sites.
Clients often ask, “what happens if our readings are above workplace exposure limits?” – We use methodologies based on HSE or NIOSH approved techniques, and UKAS accredited laboratories for analysis, as well as cross-checking and background level checks to apply quality control. But where levels of hazardous substances or physical agents are above where these should be, then we provide tailored advice and corrective action plans.
We can also link up with our environmental engineering team to provide options for engineered solutions, such as designing a new LEV system. Mabbett has no equipment to sell, we are independent consultants with the client’s best interests foremost.
See a Difference…
Throughout 2014, Mabbett have assisted our clients to gain both reassurance and confirmation that existing controls remain suitable, or identify those instances where exposure levels have been exceeded and, therefore, present a risk to employee health.
