Development (Planning) Air Quality Assessments

New developments can negatively impact local air quality, and/or introduce sensitive receptors to areas where air quality is a concern. Air quality must be considered as a material consideration when determining planning applications, and therefore requires early action in any project to avoid potential delays.

Using the most appropriate dispersion modelling software (e.g. ADMS-Roads) and following current guidance, Mabbett can:

  • determine the baseline air quality in the area of the development;
  • qualitatively assess the impact of any construction activities;
  • predict the impact on local air quality from the proposed development;
  • predict the impact on any new receptors introduced by the proposed development, and
  • advise on suitable mitigation strategies, where necessary, to include preparation of dust management plans.

Mabbett undertake air quality assessments for a wide variety of developments, and have a proven track record of helping our clients achieve planning consent in a cost-effective manner.

Industrial (Permitting) Air Quality Assessments

Industrial facilities, often those with environmental permits, can have a significant impact on local air quality and an assessment of air emissions is often required for new or developing installations. Mabbett regularly liaise with regulators across the U.K. (e.g. SEPA, EA, NIEA and local councils) for such assessments and know what is required to satisfy regulatory requirements. This can be undertaken for any pollutant, including odour, and used to define an appropriate stack height if required.

Where possible we will look to screen your emissions from detailed assessment by firstly using cost-effective techniques such as D1 calculations or the EA’s H1 Software Tool. Where detailed assessment is required, we will use the most appropriate dispersion modelling software (e.g. ADMS 5.2) to undertake a more robust (less conservative) assessment.

If the predicted air quality impact is too large we will work with you to define a practical, cost-effective mitigation strategy, from process modification to abatement plant design and installation. We can also assist in the preparation of suitable management systems e.g. odour management plans.
